Windows 8.1 final version is released to PC makers

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that Windows 8.1 final version has come to us and released to manufacturers.

However, the final version of Windows 8.1 is available while the free update version won’t be available until October 17^th in the Windows Store. The real boxed discs will appear in physical store the day after.

Windows 8.1, code-named “Blue”, which has made many improvements from its older operating system, making it more suitable for the current Windows users.

If you can’t wait to the Windows 8.1 finial version, a preview version is still available for downloading, new apps, new features, native 3D printing support, and many other new highlights. One of the most important is: You can boot directly to the desktop.

  It is reported that in the next few weeks Microsoft plans to release quick patches to fix some of the system holes and add some features as well.

Microsoft spokesman said the company “is working with a limited number of partners to develop applications, in order to fully demonstrate the new features of Windows 8.1. But now, we have no further information to share with you.”

Browsers’ ad-blocking threaten free sites, researchers say

Around one fourth browsers have ad-blocking tools, which reduce revenue of free-content websites which mainly depend on advertisements as income, an Irish company said last week.

“It’s a vicious cycle. Ads are becoming more aggressive to capture eyeballs,” said Neil O’Connor, CEO of PageFair, a Dublin-based company, “but that forces more people to install ad-blocking software. It’s a lose-lose situation.”

However, without the revenue ads generate, most websites cannot sustain operations. Magazine sites and most news sites rely on advertising for revenue.

PageFair found something from its survey. “We started this because we were a publisher ourselves,” said O’Connor. “We wanted to know how many of our users were dropping out by installing ad blockers, and thought it was maybe as high as 10 percent. But we found that 30 percent were blocking our ads. That was shocking to us.”

22.7% of the users on average who browsed to the several hundred sites monitored by PageFair since September 2012 used an ad blocker.

AdBlock Plus, which is available for add-blocking for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer, is the famous one. O’Connor finds that, Firefox users block ads more than other browsers users, and the percentage is 37 percent. Chrome took second place with a 30 percent blocking rate. IE’s rate was minimal, less than 1 percent.

Ad blocking is becoming more popular, O’Connor found. So what’s the answer for sites struggling to deal with ad blocking?

“One way is to remove the most disturbed and annoying ads—especially those distracting animations and sounds—and rely on more discrete text-based ads, “said O’Connor. Some websites include Google begin to work with ad blocker makers rather than fight the tide.

Google is seeking experts for the upcoming Helpouts video calling program

Google, the Internet giant is seeking experts for its upcoming Helpouts video calling program.

What is the Helpouts ? Well, it’s a face-to-face, live video calling service, which is based on Google’s Google+ Hangouts program. The most significance lies in that the service is designed to allow experts in particular areas to share their knowledge with others who want to learn from them.

The service is not yet on line, and Google is still collecting a variety of subjects of expertise resources. Now Helpouts support page has listed eight categories, including home gardens, computer electronics, health counseling, nutrition & fitness, fashion & beauty, art & music, cooking and education.

Google is strict with “expert” contents. Anyone who wants to create Helpouts items must provide specify qualifications.

Some of Google Helpouts service is charged (through Google Wallet payments), while others are free. For charge-parts Google will charge 20% of the platform fee, including credit card transaction fees and Google Wallet fees.

Microsoft is preparing to terminate Microsoft Tag Service after two years

Microsoft announced on Monday that it planned in two years, which is on August 19th 2015, to terminate Microsoft Tag service.

  Microsoft Tag is a label service launched by Microsoft in 2009. It allows users themselves to design barcode labels, 2D barcodes. It is combined with NFC short-range communication function. These barcodes contain varieties of information, maybe product descriptions, website links, videos, or pictures, etc. As long as the mobile users scan barcodes through the device’s camera, then use Microsoft Tag Reader application and users can access the information.

According to Microsoft’s estimate, so far millions of smartphone users have downloaded Microsoft Tag program and scan over billions of barcodes appeared in magazines, packages or flyers.

However, market analyst pointed out that, since Microsoft uses its own barcode system rather than an open solution, leading to that Microsoft Tag application is not widespread.

Microsoft said before August 19th 2015, users can still log in their Microsoft Tag service accounts and create new label barcodes.
