News reports that Sony and Panasonic join together to develop a new standard format for next-generation optical disc by 2015. The disc has a capacity of storing at least 300GB data per platter.
Although the two companies have launched large-capacity optical solutions in the past, but this time the two will work together to develop a new format of optical disc for the professional market, and consumers will benefit ultimately.
There is a great progress of the Blu-ray disc than DVD in capacity. However, with the expanding demand for everyday use as well as the explosive growth of data, Blu-ray discâs capacity has gradually become not enough, to develop the next generation of optical disc is the next step. But as the capacity of the USB flash drive increases, and the cloud network drives becoming more and more popular, optical disc becomes not such popular. And compared to the USB flash drive, itâs not so easy to use an optical disc, and itâs not good at abrasion-resistant, these are its weaknesses.
Amazon and other companies are trying to convince users to transfer their data to the cloud, but the users still need data backup. Occupational areas require high-capacity discs to store high-definition movies and other content. Sony and Panasonic hope to take the lead in developing this new disc format, followed by the industry to benefit consumers.
