Samsung launches 840 EVO SSD series

If you don’t buy a SSD drive for your pc because of the capacity, now comes your choice. Samsung launches its new 840 EVO SSD series recently. The capacity is up to 1TB. The price is aggressive: $110 for 120GB version, $190 for the 250GB, $370 for the 500GB, $530 for the 750GB, and $650 for the 1TB, the capacity-price ratio is as low as 65 cents per GB.

Thanks to the 3-bit MLC (Mulit-Level Cell) NAND storage technology, Samsung can make a larger capacity of SSD with a lower cost. The 3-bit MLC NAND can store 3 bits of information in one cell, so it has a capacity of 1.5 times than the 2-bit MLC NAND. The 840 EVO SSD series use the 19nm manufacturing process technology.

Samsung positions the 840 EVO SSD as a medium product between the 840 series and the 840 Pro series, the 840 Pro series remain the flagship SSD series.

Samsung uses some storage space of the SSD as 1-bit SLC. The space has a similar speed and life with the SLC cell, and being used as the cache. Samsung calls this technology TurboWrite. If you install the Samsung’s driver called Rapid, then the SSD will set aside part of the RAM as cache to accelerate the transmission speed.
