For a long time, Microsoft is frustrated in its tablets market because of the processor’s high energy cost and high TDP. Even the lowest power-consumption chipset also can not meet the low power requirement. So the tablets are equipped with cooling fans—So the tablets based on Microsoft OS are thicker and more noisy than the ARM-based tablets.
It will not get better until Intel announced the new Core Y-series Haswell processors on Tuesday. The thinner and fanless tablets become reality. Previously Intel announced its Core Y-series chips would be of 6 watts, and the new processors are of 4.5 SDP. The 1.5-watt difference makes the tablet to be fanless. According to Intel’s spokesman, the new processors make the battery life to be more than 9 hours.
The new processors are allowed to boost to a higher performance for short time, gaining a balance between performance and power consumption, but may give press to the fanless cooling system. The new Haswell processors will compete with the ARM chips as well as Intel’s own Atom chipsets. The quantities of the first round of energy-sipping will be limited, according to Intel.
