Astonished at Android’s fragmentation issue

Open Signal is a company that has the capable of detecting smart phones. They have tests for Android and iOS systems. By detecting they come to a conclusion that Andrews faces serious fragmentation problems.

When people say that a system has a fragmentation problem, it usually means that the application developers need optimize their applications for a variety of hardware devices. All operating systems are more or less facing fragmentation problems, but the degree varies.

For example, developers develop applications for iOS, they do not need to think too many equipments, because Apple has just launched 15 kinds of iOS devices so far, and of all iOS device users, 95 percent are using Apple’s latest iOS 6 system, which is the main reason attracting developers to develop applications for iOS. Many software projects only need one person to have all iOS devices tested for compatibility. However, the situation is quite different for Android. Now there are thousands of devices using the Android OS, of the 1/3 of the devices are still running the legacy system, and this version has a lot of bugs and security vulnerabilities. And the devices with the latest Android version account for only 5.6%. This is the fragmentation problem that the Android is facing with.

The worse is the screen size fragmentation problem. Android devices have the size of dozens of kinds. All those who want to develop applications for Android had to design for dozens of different sizes, different device screen resolutions.

Android application developers’ heart is bleeding; you can say that each launch of a new Android device is plugging in a knife to their hearts.
