Qualcomm thinks eight-core processors are 'nonsense'

Referring to new eight-core chips, a Qualcomm executive said that the eight-core mobile processors are nonsense, and the consumer wants an experience rather than just pile up cores together.

Senior vice president of Qualcomm Anand Chandrasekher said that one can’t put eight lawnmower engines together and claim to have an eight-cylinder Ferrari. It just make nonsense. Qualcomm focuses on giving consumers a good experience — first good modems, next long battery life, and then an affordable price point. Asked whether Qualcomm would release its octa-core processor one day, Chandrasekher said: “We don’t do dumb things.”

Meanwhile, MediaTek pride itself on its “real” octa-core processor. MediaTek said its eight-core chip was just a breakthrough in technology, and it had market demand. The company’s eight-core processor will come to the market in the fourth quarter. It surpass other octa-core processors, because eight cores can be used simultaneously, which will help reduce the chip’s power consumption and improve the stability, according to MediaTek.

MediaTek and Qualcomm compete in the chip market for smart phones and tablets. MediaTek chips are used by vendors including Acer, Lenovo, Qualcomm chips can be found in the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the new Nexus 7 tablet. Samsung has also released an octa-core processor with a higher clock speed and better GPU.
